Munchkin aka Vesper

The Cochardo family was very prepared when they came to Cat Depot looking for a new addition to their household.  They have a very active brood, and they wanted to be certain whatever kitty they chose could keep up with them.  After numerous visits and many family votes, Munchkin was the winner!  They rescued a wonderful boy, and it sounds like he fits into their lives perfectly!  Thank you for giving him such a wonderful family to call his own!

Hi Michelle,

We just wanted to drop you a note about “Munchkin”.  We spent our first Christmas with “Munchkin” (who we renamed Vesper), and we feel so blessed to have him as a member of our family!!!!  He has been such a wonderful addition: adding the love, laughter, and “snuggle time” we all were seeking…we really could not have found a better match if we’d searched the world over!  The first night he was with us, he purred for probably 3 hours straight.  In fact, just looking at Vesper and talking to him will “activate” his purring J.  He has claimed his favorite sleeping area as the bay window in our dining room, as well as the windowsill nearest our bed (when he’s not lying in someone’s lap).  He is never out of sight of one of us, as he travels room to room seeking out attention and laps (yay!) J.  Having 3 active children is actually great for Vesper, as it means there is always someone ready and excited to pour out attention on him.  Our large lanai has also become an unending adventure for him, and he meows each morning to soak up some sun out there.

Our youngest recently commented that he is no longer the baby of the family, Vesper is, and I wholeheartedly agree.  Vesper really is one of us, and we love him dearly!!!  Thank you so much for all you do for the kitties and cats who need homes…they are all precious and deserve all the love and care everyone at Cat Depot provides.  Thank you, personally, for all of the time and consideration you provided to Gary and me as we searched for the purrfect addition to our family… “Munchkin”.

We’ll See You Soon,
Gary, Laura, Jeremy, Ashley, and Timothy Cochardo

Flo

Flo was always Cat Depot’s girl in charge.  She was in charge of her feline roommates and all of the people that cared for her.  On any given day, spending time with Flo and watching her orchestrate everyone around her would always bring a smile to your face.

Garry Smith came into Cat Depot looking for a cat with character!  Flo was the first cat to come to mind.  After many visits, he came to appreciate her BIG personality as much as we did!  She is now the girl in charge of his house!  She watches football, enjoys chasing lizards on the lanai, and of course, she takes over his bed at night!  She is very missed, but we couldn’t be happier that she has a home to call her own!

Dolly

Adopting a new cat is a family affair! It is so exciting to bring the new kitty home and everyone shares that excitement. Everyone except the newest family member . It is easy to forget what a scary experience it can be for a cat to go to a new place with new people.

Ingrid Wade came to Cat Depot with her three grandchildren and found the perfect cat for her. Dolly has settled in wonderfully and Ingrid’s granddaughter summed up her transition to her new home best! Thank you Thea for the fantastic poem! (see Thea's poem)

Max & Sammi

Barbara Sallee knows more than the average person about Burmese cats. She heard Cat Depot recently acquired an 8 year old Burmese named Max so she came in to just “visit” with him. Her extensive knowledge about the breed and his wonderful personality made her fall in love. He immediately fit right in to Barbara’s home and they were both very happy.

Back at Cat Depot an unusual occurrence happened. Another Burmese cat was brought in for adoption her name was Sammi. Barbara was the first person we called. She did so well with the Max…why not add one more? Sammi’s diva like qualities and playful nature spoke for themselves. She and Max are both adjusting well to their new home and Barbara is happy she just came to “visit” Cat Depot. Thank you Barbara for giving them both the perfect home!

Keeley

Every time a cat is adopted it is a cause for celebration at Cat Depot. The staff and volunteers smiles are always a little bigger when the adoption involves one of our longer term residents. Jacqueline M Poschmann adopted our Keely and her letter to us best describes how Keely is adjusting. Thank you Jacqueline for giving her such a wonderful home!

The first time I saw Keely I was completely mesmerized by how gorgeous she was, and how she greatly resembled our cat, Kero, who had passed away five years ago. She did not approach me, and remained nonchalant and unexcited by my presence. This deterred me a bit, but I realized the hectic atmosphere that day from the open house-festival, there were a lot of people there, and many days before that, so from her perspective, what the heck made me special?

So I decided to visit a few days later on a quieter day. She approached me and let me pet her for a while, I thought to myself, this is good progress, and left it at that for a few days.

I could not stop thinking about her, each day during work and classes I would be thinking about how sad she looked and how she would stare into the distance outside the fence.

The fifth time I went to visit her, the moment I opened the door she came running towards me meowing enthusiastically and rubbing against my legs. I knew that she remembered me.

I was baffled when I discovered that the only things written on her records were that her previous owners didn’t ‘bond’ with her and that she just hid. Well of course she just hid, the record also said that the people had multiple cats, dogs and children. I would’ve hid too.

My family and I decided, with the suggestion of the wonderful volunteers at Cat Depot, that we foster her for three weeks to see how she does.

Then, the fateful moment… I opened the carrier in my room, and her tiny grey paw took its first step out… She walked all around the room looking at everything, and was purring constantly, trotting over to me and my mom to rub against us and then go explore some more. When I put food down for her she dug in right away, purring as she ate. After she was done eating and exploring she laid down underneath my desk. The next day she mostly laid under my desk, and when I wanted to see her I would sit on the floor, and sing the song Kero always loved, it had a soothing melody so I thought maybe she would like it too… I can’t even describe the feeling when she ran out from under her hiding place to rub against me and let me pet her while I sang to her. She had tears in her eyes. She was purring so loudly with happiness I thought I would cry too.

It has been a month and Keely loves everyone in the household, even our dog! And everyone loves her. She acts like a completely different cat now, always wants to be with us, she runs over when any of us calls her… she sleeps on my bed and watches movies with us on the couch.

I think there is something we can all learn from Keely; Her trust in people, and her willingness to open up her heart again after being alone for so many years is an inspiration to us all, and we are proud to call her one of the family.

Merry Christmas to everyone at Cat Depot!

We are happy to say, Keely is home for the holidays.

Kaybee

One of Cat Depot’s favorites found a family to call her own! We will miss her unique meow and the high fives she gave us for treats but we couldn’t be happier to see her settled into her home for the holidays! Read the letter below from her new owner.

Hi Michelle, Just wanted to say thank you for finding our little girl Kaybee! She is soooo sweet and has adjusted very well. Didn't take her very long at all. Her brothers have been very nice to her.
She is our best Christmas present this year!

Thanks again....have a wonderful Christmas!

Mittens

Hi Lauren:

Thanks for helping me find my new family. My new home is really pretty. The kids are nice to me and I have enjoyed exploring the new place and all the Christmas decorations.

I am on my best behavior and love my new litter box, scratching posts, my new vet and all my new friends. I snore while laying on the new sofa with my family. I really am a lap cat.

Thanks for taking such great care of me while I found a new home. I will miss all my feline and human friends at Cat Depot.

Please let me know if you want me to come back to do any events for you to help raise money for the others. My new kid owners will be glad to help.

Love,
Mittens
xxooo

P.S. Give Bubbles a hug for me.

Abby Roo,

a.k.a Libby, enjoyed her first Halloween with her new family. Jan Runei tells us that Libby fits right in with everyone and is a wonderful addition to their household. As the Halloween decorations were put out, Miss Abby Roo chose her favorite and snuggled right in. Thank you to the Runei family for giving us a glimpse into this little girl’s new life!

Erma Finds Love

Every adoption center has a story about a cat who needs someone special. Erma was one of those cats. Deaf, and with a head tilt, Erma waited a long time to find someone who would overlook her problems and accept her unconditionally. When Margit met Erma, she knew she had to help. That day was close to two years ago.

Today, Margit accepted a painting of her beloved Erma, by artist, Nancy Colby. The painting has hung on Cat Depot's wall as a reminder of all the special needs cats who are looking for their own special person to love. We thought it was time to pass it on.

Thank you, Margit, for loving Erma and for reminding us once again, what a difference one person can make.

Sergeant Major, Heathcliff, and Suzie

Cat Depot enlisted the whole community in our quest to honor Burt Bershon’s memory by finding a home for his beloved family of catz. The trio has found a wonderful home! Avid animal lovers, Donna and Wayne Porter were reading the most recent edition of Today’s Seniors and could not stop thinking about our furry friends. It’s safe to say that by the time they came to meet the family their minds were already made up. They were ready to welcome Sergeant Major, Heathcliff and young Suzie into their home. We want to thank everybody that used all their resources to make this happen! A special thank you to Donna and Wayne Porter for taking in this readymade family we all hold so dear to our hearts!

Blackie

Cat Depot's graphic designer, Fran, has always had a soft spot in her heart for our little angel Blackie. His striking yellow eyes and soft black coat were an instant attraction. Fran visited with Blackie multiple times and it was obvious that the two were meant for each other. After Fran’s beloved cat Buddy passed over the rainbow bridge, the family began to long for another feline companion to not only comfort their souls but also their other cat, Vincent. It was an easy choice for Fran to make Blackie apart of her family and she beamed as she brought the thirteen pound bundle of black fur home. Needless to say, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Fran and her husband Alex are the perfect example of responsible pet owners who give the world to help the cats they love. Through slow introductions, cat cookies, and lots of love, Blackie has assimilated into their family and is happier than ever. He and his feline brother, Vincent, have become the best of friends and play into the wee hours of the night. Blackie curls up in his favorite basket every night with what we can only believe is a smile on his handsome little face.

Lawrence of Arcadia

Our new newsletter was barely hot off the presses and the cover boy, Lawrence of Arcadia’s popularity soared. Larry’s trying tale touched the heart of many but it was Jim Ambrose who really felt a connection with our rising star. After spending quite some time with our guy, Jim knew this was the cat for him. We are pleased to report Lawrence is doing great. He has adjusted wonderfully to his new home. Jim is an accomplished pianist and Lawrence waits with anticipation for his own personal evening concerts! Mozart, Bach, and Czajkowski really gets Larry’s tail moving as the new family jams to classical music. From homeless to a home filled with love and culture, it's not a bad way to end the story of Lawrence of Arcadia!

Callie

Susan & Marshall Horowitz came to Cat Depot looking for the perfect addition to their lives. They weren’t looking for any particular breed, color, or age. They needed a very laid back kitty that would adjust easily to new environments. The Horowitz’s have homes in both Florida and Massachusetts. They travel between the two frequently and their new cat would have to like to fly! They two spent hours meeting potential candidates and at the end of the day, well . . . there was just something about Callie!

Callie has made her first trip and she did fabulously! She settled right in on the plane and the Horowitz’s could not be happier. She is a perfect fit for their lifestyle! Does this mean that Callie is earning frequent flyer miles?

Rory

Can you say love at first sight? Rory started talking when he saw Jean and Jeff Cooper, residents of Sarasota, FL.

He could not have snuggled more as he wrapped his paws around Jean’s neck.

Visiting grandchildren, Paige and Derek Goderis from Canton, Michigan, gave their approval of their grandparent’s choice.

Thank you, Jean and Jeff for giving this sweet boy a better life. And, a round of heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers who helped Rory get back on his feet again.

Congratulations, Rory! You go, boy!

Sheldon

Sheldon has found love, a new home, and a new pal. After six months in quarantine at Cat Depot, Sheldon has been adopted. Recovering from injuries sustained after tangling with an animal of unknown origin, Sheldon, now named Kipsy, has discovered that being a couch potato is not bad! Not bad at all.

Congratulations Kipsy and thank you, Joyce and Stan Fox for adopting this beautiful and very sweet boy.

Celica

We just received an update from the proud parents of Celica, the little kitten who was found last May in the engine of a car. Her loud consistent meow saved her from a bad situation and landed her in a cat’s dream home. This little girl won the hearts of many, but stole the heart of one, and Jorge Rosado has spoiled her completely. She is doing wonderfully and lives the life of a princess! Her name has been changed to Nikita and she answers to it readily. She is one happy girl, now that her frightening ordeal is behind her.

Peony

May was not a good month for this beautiful calico. She was a new mother of four and she had nowhere to live. Her natural motherly instincts lead her to the warehouse of a local construction company. The owners feared she was not safe there, so they brought her to Cat Depot. Naturally, Peony’s babies found good homes quickly.

Jackie McKenzie fell in love with this pretty girl, and as you can see, Peony’s hardest decision of the day is deciding which part of her new home she should enjoy!

Buster

For much too long, if you visited Cat Depot, you had the pleasure of getting to know Buster. He is a sweet cat who spent the majority of his days napping in the sun on the patio. He was diagnosed early on with chronic sinusitis. Everyone fell in love with this boy but his runny nose deterred people from taking him home. As time passed, Buster seemed bored and depressed. We asked Kathy Jewel, one of our foster parents, if she would give him the loving environment of her home and a change of scenery.

Kathy gave us weekly reports on his progress. She described a curious energetic cat when she spoke of Buster in her home. And, he wasn’t the only one benefitting from the foster experience. Kathy was falling in love! Buster paid a visit to Cat Depot this week and our veterinarian couldn’t have been happier. He looked great! Kathy also adopted Buster that day! Cat Depot salutes Kathy and Buster and all the foster parents who make a lifesaving difference in the lives of homeless cats. Thanks, Kathy - for giving Buster the perfect place to call home.

Louie and Lily

Nancy Levine spent days with us at Cat Depot searching for the perfect additions to her household.  Every staff member and volunteer waited with anticipation to see who she would fall in love with. As it turned out,  Louie and Lily found a wonderful home!  Thank you, Nancy for giving us a peak into their new lives and for giving them your love.

Happy Memorial Day

We enjoyed a fun-filled three-day weekend. It started Friday afternoon at the Cat Depot. The fun continued on Sunday at Tropicana Field. And today we’re hosting a Memorial barbeque and pool party. I’m ready another long weekend just to get some rest.

It’s been about three years since we’ve had any pets (other than goldfish), and for the past few months I’ve been warming to the idea. The plan was to get two little boy kitties since I’m outnumbered by all the girls in the house.

When the Cat Depot called last week to say that they had two orange and white kittens that just came in, I rushed over to take a look. They were both adorable of course, but they also had a beautiful cream-colored sister.

I couldn’t stand the idea of breaking them up so I ran the idea of getting three cats by Dana, and we went forward with the adoption. We named them after the Rudyard Kipling story, Rikki Tikki Tavi. - Matthew Anderson

Abagail

Hi, my name is Abagail and I am one of the luckiest cats around. The start of my life was pretty uneventful, I was born outside and separated from my mother and siblings when I was very young. Eventually, I was  brought to a shelter on the east coast of Florida called Space Coast Feline Rescue. The series of events that led up to my short stay there are a bit foggy but this is where my story begins to get interesting!

I was chosen with a group of kitties to transfer to Cat Depot for adoption.  Nine of my friends and I were loaded into a van and we made many stops  before arriving just outside of Sarasota. There, volunteers Jim and Katie from Cat Depot, tried to reassure us that we did not have much further to go.  I for one, was  tired of being in a carrier and riding in a van.  Katie was a long time volunteer for Cat Depot but this was her husband Jim’s first time to really get involved. They both were very nice, but I really liked staring at Jim.  In fact, I watched him  intently and made sure he knew I was unhappy. and I did not take my eyes off him during the rest of the trip.

I spent that first night at Cat Depot thinking of Katie and Jim, and the next day I discovered Jim was doing the same thing with me!  They came back to see me the very next day, and after much discussion, Jim convinced Katie to take me home.  I now live in a beautiful home where I am loved and very spoiled!  I am  lucky that Katie and Jim are such kind people and that they decided to help out that day when I was being transported.  Since then, every day has been a great day for me!  The only downside is that Katie won’t let Jim transport any more cats for Cat Depot. Apparently, he is too easily swayed.

Terrance

I am a young guy with an old soul.  I came to Cat Depot hungry and scared.  I was fed really great food and given a lot of attention.  The staff and volunteers showed me it was okay to trust people.  At Cat Depot I was a silent observer.  I liked to watch all the people that visited us.  I found my curiosity peaked while watching all the other cats play with toys and each other.  I was content to stay in the background and watch all the activity around me.  One afternoon as I was laying in my favorite bed, a young girl began to pet me and I knew she was special.  Her name was Brianna Miller, she was here with her mother and they decided to take me home!  We are all very happy together, and they wrote a letter to tell everyone how I am doing:

Hi Michelle! My daughter and I were in about two to three weeks ago and we adopted the little gray cat named Terrance. We have renamed him Phantom and he has adjusted well. He even gets along great with our dogs! Just wanted to send some pictures of how well he's doing!

We all love him so much. Thanks for running a great facility!!

- Lisa and Brianna Miller

Jazzy the Jet-Setter

Jazzy came to Cat Depot as a kitten.  She was a playful dilute tortoiseshell who craved attention, which she received in plenty! One day, soon after her arrival, a woman brought her  daughter, Gail Ressler, to visit the cats. Gail was visiting from Pennsylvania.

The family had adopted a dilute torti  (Gracie) a few months earlier, but that didn’t stop Gail from falling in love. Because Gail was on vacation, she decided that the timing wasn’t right. So, Gail headed back to Pennsylvania with  Jazzy  on her mind.  It  didn’t take long for her to realize that she missed this little girl.

But, how was she going to get her from Florida to Pennsylvania? Gail’s mother, came to the rescue and volunteered to chaperone Jazzy on a flight.

After a clean bill of health,  Jazzy became a jet-setter. Jazzy now has a home and family to call her on and she is proud to be a resident of the Keystone state.

Go Jazzy!!! Thank you, Gail and mom!

Bandit

My name is Bandit!  My sister Rosie and I came to Cat Depot when our family lost their home.  Rosie was adopted right away and I was happy for her.  I didn’t mind staying at my temporary home for a while longer.  The staff loved and doted on me.  They also had a bunch of pet names for me, the most popular one was chubby!  This made me special. I even became a part of a program they have called, “The Chubby Cat Program!”

One day while I was basking in the sun on the lanai, a nice young couple came in and spent some time with me.  We bonded right away. Their names were Bryan and Kelley Morgan.  They took me to my new home.  Bryan works from home and I now spend my days helping him in the office  (I know he really appreciates my help), and my nights lounging with Kelley.  Sometimes change is good!
