CAT’SINO CATSABLANCA EARLY BIRD SPECIAL

Only 9 days left to get your Cat’sino Catsablanca tickets at $125. After February 29, tickets will be $150!

Reserve your place now for this wonderful event! Click here.

The committee has gone all out to ensure everyone has a great time. Whether or not you are a gambler, there is entertainment for everyone.

Congratulations to
Edith Cheitman

Congratulations to Edith Cheitman for donating to the GulfCoastGives campaign and winning a free ticket to Cat’sino. The two spay and neuter packs for the surgery center have been fully funded. Thank you for supporting this critical campaign and helping to end the overpopulation of homeless cats. And just in time...kitten season is almost here. From our hearts to yours, the cats and kittens at Cat Depot.

10 Long Term Cats in Foster Test Program

Some homeless cats are adopted immediately, while other cats can linger in animal shelters across the nation for months or even years. In an effort to place long term "community cats" (homeless cats living on their own) into loving forever homes, three test cats were placed back-to-back in a series of three foster homes for three weeks each. The results were not only miraculous, but successful. Within a month of returning to Cat Depot, all three cats were adopted.

As a result of this test, Cat Depot is moving forward with another ten long-term cats. Three have recently been placed into foster care, and Cat Depot is looking for another seven qualified foster parents.

Follow Lovey's Foster Story for the Next Three Weeks.

February is National Cat Health Month

Celebrate the love you have for your cat and make sure he or she is healthy, happy and safe. Let February be a reminder to you to make that vet appointment and have your pet checked out. And since February is also National Pet Dental Health Month, have the vet check out your pet’s teeth too.

Foster Update - Mighty Lou’s Letter

Dear Cat Depot Friends,

I'm mortified at my behavior yesterday when I visited you! My foster mom said we were going to visit Cat Depot because my eyes were running and I needed to see the vet tech. I was excited, but as soon as we drove into the parking lot, I got nervous. Was she going to leave me there? Was I going to be abandoned again? Was I going to leave my happy foster home? I got really nervous and I lost my mind. I did not mean to sit on the floor there and hiss. I did not mean to walk around being crabby with everyone. I did not mean to strike out at everyone. The strange smells and change of scenery freaked me out. I lost my little kitty mind.

My foster mom was embarrassed. I was even more embarrassed.

As soon as we got back in the car, I laid in my bed and started to purr. I was a little cuddly lump on the way home. When I got back home, things were back to normal and the terrible adventure was over.

I'm sorry for my behavior. I'm going to spend the weekend just thinking about what I did. My foster mom says I'm in time out for the whole weekend. This is where I am as I write this and this is where I'll stay.......

I still love you but I won't be back!

Love,
Lou

Help End the Overpopulation of Homeless Cats

Kitten season never ends in Florida, and Cat Depot works hard to save more than 400 little lives each year.

With our current four spay/neuter instrument packs, we are forced to sterilize packs between surgeries, slowing our efficiency and progress. We simply cannot keep up with the growing demand on any given surgery day.

Please help us purchase two more surgery packs at a cost of $1,800. With your assistance, we can increase our ability to sterilize kittens and cats for placement into good homes, and we can move one step closer to ending the overpopulation of homeless cats. Every dollar you give makes a positive difference. Just go to GulfCoastGives.com to support this campaign.

FL SARC Awareness Level Sheltering Training

Cat Depot hosted the FL State Animal Response Coalition (FL SARC) Awareness Level Sheltering training on Saturday, January 14, with 40 attendees including Cat Depot staff and volunteers, as well as community volunteers and participating local and regional animal organizations.

The day included classroom instruction, group activities, as well as a mock exercise outside Cat Depot. Students worked with their team to learn standard operating procedures to set up a temporary shelter and triage center to receive animals. This is a required course for those interested in helping animals during a disaster and to be able to respond with the Florida State Animal Response Coalition. Thank you to Consie von Gontard, Director of Training, FL SARC, and her team!

Nancy Colby Wins Award for
Best Watercolor

Nancy Colby, local award winning watercolor artist, stopped by to visit the cats at Cat Depot recently and was so moved by Bailey the Bengal’s beautiful face and markings that she immediately went home and painted her portrait. Nancy’s inspiration just won the “Best Watercolor” award at the Sarasota Art Center. The painting will be on public display through March 12. The award ceremony will be held on January 19 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Art Center on 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Congratulations Nancy and thank you for your never ending support of Cat Depot!

Meet Chompers and Pablo’s Girlfriend

Chompers and Pablo’s Girlfriend, former residents at Guantanamo Bay Military Base in Cuba, have settled in at Cat Depot through the Red, White and Mew military program. Chompers, a 9-month old male tabby, and Pablo’s Girlfriend, a one year old female tabby, enjoy play time with the other cats and love kitty treats. They hope someone will open their hearts and homes soon so they will finally have permanent loving homes!

Driving Awareness in Our Community

Thank you to the generous donors who contributed to the GulfCoastGives.org Driving Awareness campaign, and Roy Sewell, owner, at Sarasota Wraps for helping to make one dream a reality – a branded Cat Depot utility van! Honk and say hello when you see the van driving in the community. The key messages and contact information displayed on the sides and back of the van will help bring awareness to the public of our rescue, adoption, education and resource center.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

Cat Depot will close at 2 p.m. on December 31 and will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Surprise Visitor at Cat Depot

Look who stopped by to say hello to the cats and kittens - Mercury Morris, former football player with the Miami Dolphins and Super Bowl champions. In the 1972 and 1973 seasons, Morris earned Super Bowl rings in Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII, and was selected for the Pro Bowl in both years. Miracle, a beautiful medium hair white and tabby mix, was adopted a few hours after Mercury’s visit by a young family who said ‘the moment they met Miracle, it was love at first sight.”

Thank you for helping to fill empty tummies

18 days left to donate! 77% raised to date; $149 to go! You are so close to feeding every cat and kitten this month - and that's a lot of little tummies. During the last week of 2011, Cat Depot is working hard to find loving homes for 900 cats. That number will be a new high for Cat Depot! In addition, we have spayed and neutered nearly 1,400 community cats. These new record numbers are all made possible because of you. Thank you for giving your love so generously to those who need you the most - the homeless.

Blessings to you all in the New Year! Together, we can all make a difference. Just go to the Cat Depot project on gulfcoastgives.com.

Cat Depot Assists Military Families with
Operation Red, White and Mew

Cat Depot is supporting U.S. military families at Guantanamo Bay Military Base through its Operation Red, White and Mew program. The program was established in 2010 to assist our men and women in the military that have been deployed and no longer can keep their pets. Cat Depot worked in conjunction with the GTMO Veterinary Treatment facility, as well as Maddie’s Fund, to coordinate the safe arrival of two one year old tabby cats from the military base to Cat Depot. Due to a recent military base policy of only two pets per household, there is an urgent need to find homes for many relinquished or abandoned animals. Calls are being received across the state by various humane organizations for assistance. However, most animal organizations are at capacity, and it is increasingly difficult to find support.

A Home for the Holidays – 17 Adoptions!

Seventeen cats and kittens found a home for the holidays during the Open House this past weekend.

It is still snowing at Cat Depot throughout the month of December. Help make a blizzard by purchasing snowflakes for $1.00 each in honor of your pet.

And the kittens have hung up their stockings in the hope of receiving some new toys on Christmas morning – a tradition every year.

The Hughes Playhouse

Thank you to John Hughes for sponsoring Pod #10 which is now called The Hughes Playhouse. The ribbon cutting and dedication was the morning of November 23 with the entire Hughes family.

John Hughes, CEO of American Colloid Co. (now AMCOL International) worked with scientists to invent and patent “scoopable cat litter.” John was CEO from 1985-2000, but remains chairman of AMCOL International and is now semi-retired. The Hughes Playhouse is dedicated to the commercial benefits that scoopable litter brought to the company and its employees and to the more pleasant experience that this product has brought to millions of cat owners and cat lovers.

The Kids, Cats and Cupcakes Carnival

The Kids, Cats and Cupcakes Carnival on Saturday was a huge success with over 2,000 children and their families, and 17 adoptions over the weekend.  Of note Lyle was adopted who had been rescued from Haven Acres; Mickey, a long time resident; as well as a staff favorite, Domino.

The food was delicious, the Cupcakes a Go Go cupcakes divine, the games were FUN and the prizes were great.  Even more popular were the trolleys running back and forth to the parking area and Cat Depot.  Rumor has it that a few people just went on a trolley ride!

The entertainment was incredible and truly showcased the amazing talent of our youth in Sarasota and Bradenton -- twirling ballerinas, tap dancers, karate, singers, drama presentations, break dancing and even a surprise Flash Mob!  The perfect day ended with a rousing finale of Proud to be an American by Nicole Scott as an eagle flew over.

Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and staff for all your incredible support, time and dedication to help make this event a day to remember.

Pawpurr's Ball

The Pawpurr’s Ball was a huge success on Saturday.  Thank you to everyone for your generosity, and a big thank you to our sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff for making Saturday such a wonderful evening.

2012 Honored Veterinarians

Reeses had Five Pieces!

Reeses was rescued from a small cat colony behind a 7-11 and near a busy highway in Sarasota. Mother and five babies are now doing well in a temporary foster home. Due to one person taking the time to change the destiny of many animals, and with the help of a few Cat Depot volunteers and Cat Depot, this cat colony is now being greatly reduced and controlled. The remaining cats are being fed and given water on a daily basis. Working together makes their world better!

Help Our Food Bank

Help us stock our Food Bank. Wet or dry cat food is greatly needed (even open bags of food). Donations can be dropped off at Cat Depot seven days a week.

The Food Bank will be open on Sunday, December 18 from noon to 3 p.m. due to the holidays. Starting in January the Food Bank will be open the last Sunday of every month from noon to 3 p.m.

What’s New At Cat Depot?

Miller, a handsome five year old orange and white tabby, was found with what appeared to be a severe case of conjunctivitis. After an emergency visit to eye specialist, Dr. Salisbury, he was diagnosed with entropion, a condition in which your eyelid turns inward so that your eyelashes and skin rub against the eye surface, causing irritation and discomfort. Miller will be undergoing eyelid surgery by Dr. Hughes and recovering in the treatment area. Although Miller must be very uncomfortable with this condition, he has a super sweet and gentle personality. Once his operation and healing time are past him, he will be searching for a stable home life.

Our “kids” are watching TV! Two “Named” cat suites and one cat pod were purchased! Suite #1 is now, Casa de Pablo, and Suite # 6 is Suite Monroe. Adorning the doors are the photos of Pablo and Monroe along with their story.

Pod 10 was recently purchased, and we have 7 suites and pods yet to name. Suites cost $7,500.00 and Pods cost $5,000.00.

The tax deductable donations go towards helping all the cats and kittens who enter our doors on a daily basis. And, with each purchase comes a flat screen TV. The screens will be used to benefit our cat’s well being through interactive videos for cats, as a teaching tool to educate visitors about subjects such as basic cat care, community cats, how to safely trim nails, appropriate toys, litter box guidelines and eventually, “family night” – come watch a movie with our cats.

Thank you, Judith-Ann Ragona, Rose Durham and John Hughes for naming three of our ten cat rooms. Your generosity will be appreciated for years to come.
We still have seven left to name. Won’t you please honor someone you love and help homeless cats with medical, food and love? Please call or email Shelley Thayer at 941.366.2404 or email ShelleyT@catdepot.org.

Why Wrap The Cat Depot Van?

Have you ever been driving and looked over to see a plumbers truck, a mobile groomer, or some kind of service that you were looking for? Yes? Well, we have too! That's why we want to "wrap" the Cat Depot van. Our vehicle is on the road every day, seven days a week, picking up cats, rushing cats to veterinary care, hauling supplies for cats and well. . . doing everything for cats. We hope that by posting our phone number, location, and website, people will reach out to us for spay and neuter services and call us before they decide to leave their kitty behind. A generous donor has agreed to pay the majority of cost, leaving $500.00 to go. The wrap should last for years, and will hopefully help those cats who need us the most. Even a 10.00 donation will help us get there. Click here to go to Gulf Coast Gives https://www.gulfcoastgives.org/projects/396

7-11's Sunchips and Kittens

Staff at a local 7-11 noticed a little ball of fur living behind the convenience store.
She was a kitten.

That was one year and two litters ago. The young mom had survived on her own. The recent rain. fleas and flies however, were a challenge and mama started moving her kittens out of the woods and into the parking lot, under parked cars. That's when Cat Depot volunteer, Robert Burns, became worried. He had seen the mama cat weeks earlier, and had begun feeding her every day at 5am. It did not take long to discover that there were five other cats, all hungry for food. Time, consistent feedings and patience were a big help when the kittens were born. Though, the young mom, later named Sunchips, was very protective of her little ones. Eventually, she let Robert come close. All three cats are now in foster care and doing well. Mama Sunchips and her two little kittens, Gracie and Sunshine, will soon be available for adoption. The remaining cats will be trapped, sterilized and returned. This is a wonderful example of how one person can make a life altering difference for a homeless animal.

Please join us, Saturday, October 15th for our free classes on "How to Safely Trap a Cat" and "How to Maintain a Cat Colony." The 7-11 colony situation is now under control. Because of one person, this story has a happy ending. Thank you Robert, and all our wonderful volunteers, foster parents and animal lovers who change the destiny of homeless animals.

The Lucky Dozen

Cat Depot is helping with one of the largest hoarding situations in the country. Nearly 700 cats were seized from Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary, outside of Gainesville, Florida in June, of this year. The Humane Society of the United States, working with Alachua County Animal Services, PetSmart Charities(c), the Alachua Humane Society and The Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida are seeking help with approximately 550 remaining cats.

Cat Depot accepted 12 cats from Helping Hands Rescue by way of Operation Catnip, freeing up Helping Hands to take a dozen cats from Haven Acres. "This is a team effort," said Executive Director, Shelley Thayer. "No one organization can handle 550 cats. This is a great example of how organizations in the state of Florida can work together for the benefit of all animals."

All 12 cats were facing euthanasia when they were originally rescued and many have long and heartbreaking stories. But, that's all about to change. Come visit our charming dozen at Cat Depot today. They are all hoping that this is their last stop (some have lived in four different shelters) on their way to happiness. Volunteer transporters, Jim and Katie Norvell drove over six hours to pick up the kitties and bring them to Cat Depot. And this is just the beginning of the support they will receive. Go Jim and Katie!

Congressman Vern Buchanan

Cat Depot welcomed Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011. The congressman toured the facility and spoke with staff and volunteers about saving animals and working towards a no-kill community in the local area.
