Sewn with love - volunteers create fuzzy fleece cage liners

Early this year, Cat Depot began to transition away from using bulky towels to line metal clinic and isolation room animal cages to using fleece. Fleece is not only softer and more cuddly, but it also has a quicker drying time which makes a difference when you have to do as much laundry as we do. A handful of dedicated Cat Depot volunteers like Jayne Namerow have been working at home turning ordinary fleece into custom-sized cage liners. We are accepting donations of fleece, both new and used, and need more sewers to help with this project. If interested, please contact CoreyR@CatDepot.org.

We call them volunteers, but to our felines and Cat Depot team members, volunteers are heroes . . . heroes that help us save lives!

Inspired? Put your compassion into action by supporting the important work of Cat Depot. Whether caring for our cats and kittens until they find new loving homes, or helping people with their feline friends, you’ll find that there are many ways to learn, grow and help at Cat Depot.

  • Adult Program is open to anyone aged 16 years old or older. Volunteers 16-17 years old will need parental consent on their volunteer application.
  • Parent & Me Program is open to young people 8 to 15 years old and an accompanying parent or guardian. This youth/adult team goes through all training together and works together. The youth is not permitted to volunteer alone until they reach the age of 16.
  • Orientation - The first step in joining our volunteer team is to attend a Volunteer Information Session (VIS). The VIS is a general educational session that will prepare you for volunteer experience at the Cat Depot. We provide an overview of Cat Depot and a chance to learn more about the opportunities we have available.
  • Training - We provide department-specific training to prepare you for your assignment(s) as we want you to be safe and effective in your volunteer role. Additional support is provided throughout your volunteer experience.

Grant Writer Committee
Grant writers and researchers needed for special projects. Through a Florida License Plate Grant Cat Depot spayed and neutered 810 cats! That's the good news - the bad news is, our funding just ran out. We need to get busy and apply for another grant to help all those cats who need sterilization. In addition, we are always searching for funding. This is a great way to play a major role in helping homeless cats and kittens. For more info, email Shelley Thayer, Executive Director.

Teen Volunteers are National Award Winners

You may not know their true faces, but you always recognize teen volunteers Erin and Caitlyn Colleran as our very own Cat Depot ‘cats’ in full costume at most special events. Erin and Caitlyn’s fashion design talent was recognized not only with a first place award in the state of Florida, but a national first place award in fashion design at the Technology Student Association (TSA) conference in Dallas.

The category criteria was to re-design two costumes for a current Broadway production and they chose the Addams Family. The winning team had to provide hand drawn sketches, computer drawn sketches, research on the play and reasoning for garment type. Over 2000 beads were sewn onto the garment creating 50 spiders, and the dress incorporated tiny battery powered lights sewn onto the inside of the skirt that gave an eerie glow. And that was just the beginning of their project!

Please join us in congratulating Erin and Caitlyn on their well deserved first place national award. (That is if you recognize them when they are volunteering at Cat Depot!)

Cat Depot is a progressive rescue, adoption, education and resource center – all made possible because of hardworking, dedicated volunteers.
