Operations Level Class:
To Be Determined

When disaster strikes, our team of trained volunteer responders will be there to shelter and protect Florida's companion animals.

This class will give you the expertise and practical experience required to become a professional disaster animal responder. The Awareness Level Small Animal Emergency Sheltering class is certified by the Florida Department of Emergency Management and is required to respond in Florida to help companion animals during a disaster.

Florida State Animal Response Coalition offers three levels of Emergency Animal Sheltering Training.

Each level builds upon the previous level's knowledge and experience. The trainings are job/task based. When you are called upon to assist you can be confident you know and understand the job you are being deployed to do.

1. Awareness Level Sheltering training is the foundation course required to assist with caring for sheltered animals during a     disaster. Course topics include: Personal Preparedness, Overview of the Incident Command System, Deployment Preparedness, Assisting in Shelter Set Up, Daily Care and Feeding, Proper Cage Cleaning and Disinfection, Animal Behavior, Stress Management, Code of Conduct for Response, Zoonotic Disease, Personal Safety, and Post Traumatic Stress and more.

2. Operations Level training expands upon the basic daily care of the animals. This is the next step to becoming a leader in Emergency Animal Sheltering. After completion of the Operations Level training, you will understand and be able to work in a variety of positions, including being a team leader in jobs such as: Volunteer registration, Animal Intake, Lost and Found, Donations, Kennel Row Lead, Animal Export/Transport, Animal Decontamination, Supply section, and more.

3. Technician Level is the highest level of training. After completing this level you will be able to coordinate, set up and manage an Emergency Animal Shelter. At this level you will work in close coordination with State and Local authorities during an emergency or disaster to plan, assist, shelter and reunited animals with their families.

Participation in the program does not obligate you to volunteer if a disaster occurs. There are many reasons one may not be available, such as family or work obligations at the time of the request. For this reason it is imperative to continue to increase our volunteer membership in order to meet the demands during a true emergency.
