Athena - Meow Mayor

Athena, adoptable cat at Cat Depot

Athena's Advice, Day 8

Athena here!

Every day here at Cat Depot brings another opportunity for growth. I meowed with Sara today, who lives in Mighty Lou Central. Sara is one of our longest residents, she has been here since May 2017. She spent most of the last seven months in a pod, on a diet, trying to lose weight.

Now when she moved to an office, she has blossomed. She gets the privilege of wandering around the administration hallway, so I see her stroll by my office regularly. She looks so happy and active.

Instead of being touchy and aloof, Sara now squeaks for attention and purrs when a visiting human leans down to pet her. She's still a big kitty, but she's glowing rather than gloomy. And you have to see her run to believe it.

The change has revitalized me as well. Living in an office is a nice change from the pod and I get to see a whole different side of Cat Depot. I'm keeping busy, of course. Who else would keep my human office-mates on their feet? All new experiences, new sounds, new friends, and a more relaxed pace has done me well. I'm back to the best version of myself: upbeat, affectionate, and curious.

Athena's Advice, Day 1

Hey all!

My name is Athena. If you have visited Cat Depot in the last ten months, you might remember me from Casa de Pablo. I'm the tortoiseshell kitty who loves to play and run around.

I have been known to play with string, feathers, bells, and plastic pingpong balls. Anything that crinkles or rolls? I'm there!

I have lived with and learned from many past Meow Mayors, including Dapper Dan and Zahara. I watched Zahara's clicker training closely and considered myself her understudy. I watched what behaviors resulted in treats and mimicked her as closely as I could.

I never got any treats, but I'm sure I did it right. That's okay, though. I didn't learn for the food, but for the satisfaction of a job well done.

In honor of my new position as Meow Mayor, I've moved from the FIV pod to Haven of Love, where I can oversee and help with Cat Care and TNVR. I find both departments to be vital to the work that Cat Depot does.

Cat Care, or course, keeps us fed and clean. The friendly Cat Caregivers are often the first human faces we see in the mornings.

The effects of TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) are felt far beyond the walls of Cat Depot. As a kitty who was a young mother myself, I often wonder how different my life would have been if a TNVR team had found me before I got pregnant. Maybe I wouldn't have suffered from the hernia Cat Depot repaired for me?

It all worked out in the end, I suppose. After all, I made it here to talk to you.
