Column: Let this constitutional amendment end greyhound racing in Florida

Right now, Floridians have a chance to put a stop to the one of the cruelest "sports" left in America - greyhound racing. Two past Florida Senate presidents, Tom Lee and Don Gaetz, have introduced an amendment that would phase out greyhound racing - a "sport" already illegal in 40 states. On average, a racing greyhound dies in Florida every three days and many more are injured.

Shelter launches adoption program for FeLV-positive cats – and they all go home!

Can animal shelters find homes for cats who test positive for feline leukemia (FeLV)? That was the question at Chicago’s Tree House Humane Society.

Here’s what happened when they decided to try, told by their director of veterinary services, Dr. Emily Swiniarski.

"Our adoptions department has never considered FeLV-positive cats for adoption before. They were sent to sanctuaries, or left in foster for their lifetime, at which point most of these fosters essentially adopted the FeLV cats. After educating staff, we decided to try an adoption promotion for the month of September 2016 to gauge public interest, and hoped for success."

Final chance to stop importing puppy mill animals to Sarasota county

Sarasota in Defense of Animals requests animal lovers to attend the Sarasota County Commission meeting on Wednesday January 27th at 9 AM. The meeting will be held at the Commission Chambers, 1660 Ringling Blvd, Building 16. Please wear red in support of the ordinance.

If you are unable to attend, e-mail Commissioners:

"Retail pet stores often knowingly sell animals with pre-existing health problems stemming from inhumane conditions. The buyers are stuck paying for unexpected medical bills and many animals suffer needlessly. This is an acknowledged problem, and nine other cities in Florida alone have already banned retail pet sales, with 35 cities banning the practice nation-wide.

For these reasons, the Sarasota County Board of Commissioners is currently reviewing an ordinance that would ban retail pet sales in Sarasota County while still allowing adoptions. This issue has become hotly contested."
